The studio’s theme is the change of a harmful industrial operation into a space that will enhance the environment and society. More precisely, the AGET cement factory in Volos is closed down, which causes concern and discomfort in the local community due to its negative effects on the environment. The operation of the factory has caused social reactions due to the emission of gaseous pollutants from the burning of poor quality fuels, namely the use of unapproved processed waste. In response to these actions, a movement of active citizens is demanding that the factory should be removed from the city. In this context, scenarios for regeneration and renewal of the area are proposed. Initially, two main public attractions for the area are placed, the Natural History Museum and a section of the University of Thessaly. An important part of our proposals are the large vegetation areas.
Different types of configurations are created, either in the form of a square, or in large areas of greenery, or with denser planting of trees. In addition, there are stadiums and sports facilities that are open to the general public. Paths and bike paths extend throughout the parks facilitating the movement of visitors and directing them to all types of vegetation. In harmony with these alternations of greenery are placed low-rise residential complexes as well as a dormitory building for the accommodation of university students. The proposal is completed with the catering zone located on the former docks of AGET and connected to the rest of the facilities by footbridges.
